The T3 has weld projections on the top of the flange for welding to the surface of the component.  The exterior surface of the component will be left virtually unmarred.  The T3 is designed to give extra long thread engagement in blind hole application.  The long body of the nut can also be used as a bearing surface or as a spacer.
